Yes, you heard it right! the news is like Rohail Hyatt along with his crew recently traveled all the way to Istanbul to collaborate with some Turkish Musicians.

Now there are two possibilities, either Coke Studio Pakistan team went there to record some songs for Coke Studio Season 6

OR

Like Coke Studio at MTV, which is specifically for Indian audience, Turkey is also having a musical show of its own kind. So we think, if it’s the scenario no 2, Rohail – along with some other Pakistani musicians – was there to help them kick-start the show.

In no time, Coke Studio had become a new export to our neighbors and inspired them to try to create similar musical magic in India. After receiving Rohail Hyatt’s blessings for an Indian reincarnation of the show, Coke Studio @ MTV was started and had quite a rocky start with its first season spearheaded by the incomparable Leslie Lewis.

Aditya Swamy, the head of MTV India, had a pretty good grasp of what the problem might be. Rohail Hyatt deeply invested in every aspect of the show because its an outlet for his vision. Says Swamy “Rohail is a genius, but no producer in India would ever dedicate themselves to one project with so many opportunities present.” and so Coke Studio @ MTV was reincarnated to incorporate multiple producers and the new formula was extremely well received.

Many agree that Coke Studio @ MTV has helped develop a platform for the alternative music scene within India which is still dominated by Bollywood music.  Wasim Basir of Coca Cola goes further in saying “Places like the well-known Hard Rock Café are playing our music and asking us for live performances, which is never the case for Bollywood music, the level of acceptance has been great.”

Coke Studio @ MTV has become one of the few Indian programs that pays homage to a Pakistani Creation. They aren’t really competitors because they both are unique and Swamy and Basir are the first to admit that Rohail’s Studio has been a game changer that has helped transform the Indian music industry as well as Pakistan’s. “As a local radio jingle goes these days ‘Britney chali gayi aur sufi agaye’. There was a time when we [in India] used to just have a particular DJ night at clubs, but now we [also] have Sufi nights. I am really happy that this influence is coming from our neighbouring country,” Swamy says. “This is how Coke Studio and Pakistani musicians have changed the game!”

Coke Studio has always been surprising as the house band experiments with new sound, new music and new killer combinations to achieve yet another benchmark of making history in Pakistani music.

Abrar revealed his plan and also asked for some suggestion on his Facebook page,”I have been invited to participate in Coke Studio year 2013 and I am trying to choose any 4 songs preferably from my albums , plz suggest …..”. Despite the addition of some big names to the upcoming season,which includes Ali Azmat and Ali Zafar, Invitation to Abrar still seems meaning full, as the Bhangra musician can single handedly lift the show up.

These days Abrar is politically more active than Music, but one thing is for sure, he is going to add another dimension to Coke Studio’s versatile music and it would be interesting to see which songs he choose to perform. Season 6 of Coke Studio is definitely going to be worth the wait!

In a tweet Ali Azmat revealed the big news, he is gonna go to Korangi Karachi on 16th November 2012 for the demo recordings of Coke Studio 6. The most experienced and ex-lead vocalist of Pakistan’s famous Junoon Band will be recording songs in the new installment of Coke Studio.

This doesn’t mean that we will be watching Coke Studio’s new episodes in a month or two. For those who don’t actually know, Coke Studio is a seasonal program that gets air for two months during the summer season of the year. But for the episodes of those two months, the team behind Coke Studio work for several months.

Coke Studio Cycle

The Coke Studio demo recordings start at the end of the year i.e November or December usually. During this period, various artists are invited to the studio. They get the demos to play, sing  in the state of the art most professional studios of Coke. Not all invited musicians make it to the final artists line up.

Once the demo compositions of all artists work out fine, which takes a couple of months and stretches the date up to February and March, the songs are then recorded in full and then in the month of March or April , the artists are invited back again to record their music videos. Recorded performances then go for post production and then after a month of progress, the first episode of Coke Studio airs in the start or at the end of May. Coke Studio episodes used to stretched up till 14th August but from last 2 years, the season finishes before August due to the Islamic month of Ramadan.

Coke Studio is NOT COMPLETELY LIVE MUSIC SHOW as most people say or believe. The songs are recorded way before the music videos of it get shot. So what we see on TV is not something broadcasting live from some Studio.

Getting back on the topic, Ali Azmat is making his second appearance in Coke Studio. Earlier Ali Zafar, Atif Aslam, Bilal Khan, Zeb and Haniya have been featured twice in the Coke Studio Seasons. Sanam Marvi is the only singer who is being continuously featured in CS from last 3 seasons.

Meesha Shafi has been one hell of a rising star in the Pakistani Music industry and with her version the song ‘Dasht-e-Tanhai’, it cannot be denied that she has kept the spirits of legendary musician Iqbal Bano and mesmerizing poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz alive.

SYMT and Sanam Marvi performed an incredible duet together as their song ‘Koi Labda’ has managed to be quite an asset for the current season. Despite the lyrics not being impressive, the combination proved to be worthy as its pop flavor and sensational melody did the trick.

One can definitely not forget the song ‘Seher’ as this was exactly what Coke Studio has been looking for. The show has always been a combination of various musical instruments and with the addition of sitar, the current season successfully managed to spice things up. With a father like Ustad Rais Khan, one can imagine where the chip-off-the-old-block Farhan Rais Khan got his roots from.

The song starts with heavy but slow heart capturing vocals by Meesha with no background music. The stunning Meesha continues the flow for the first two minutes and then comes the awaited drums and acoustic guitars doing their thing. The song becomes even better with the matching background music. The best thing about the song, other than Meesha’s talented voice, is its simplicity as the background music is solely based on soft drumbeats and even softer acoustics. Unlike many other Coke Studio songs, it does not comprise of loud electric guitars or trembling drum beats.

Coke Studio has received better feedback season after season and with Meesha Shafi performing this song alone, the Pakistani music industry is indeed getting better. In my humble opinion, the song is one of the best performances by the stunning Meesha Shafi and definitely worth listening for any Coke Studio fan.
