From Sampooran (a set of five notes) to Saptak (a set of seven notes), we preview Mekaal Hasan Band’s latest album.

I’ll confess: the Mekaal Hasan Band (MHB) for me (and for quite a few people) has been an acquired taste; mostly brought upon by attending some of its live performances. The first album, Sampooran, featured artistes that are the best in their field, but has often been described as too ‘hard to digest’. It definitely wasn’t listener-friendly, and the worst critique that one can give it is that the sheer perfection sought in the technique employed in the musical and vocal arrangements had robbed it of its soul. Getting off to a slow start, the album picked up a couple of years later, once the style of music (an attempt at a type of eastern jazz, if you may) managed to penetrate the minds of local audiences. Sampooran is now one of the stronger music albums to come out from the local pop arena. (more…)

Album Review: Overload’s Pichal Pairee

Album Review

Slicker than the average
With their second album, Overload have moved further into the world of hypnotic percussion and frenzied riffs with a distinct female vocalist in tow. As for the dhols… they are still very much a part of Overload’s punch.
Instep lends an ear to the record that is Pichal Pairee…

Pakistani Albums expected to release in January 2010

you guys might be thinking that January is going to be a great month for the Pakistani Music lovers as there will be major albums releasing. But wait a minute !!! I have some reservations.

Its been a long time since any Pakistani Music album- released by a record label- hit the music market of Pakistan. The last & worth mentioning album was of Shiraz Uppal’s “Ankahi” that released under the label of Fire Records. On the other side, 2 Mainstream Bands i.e Mekaal Hassan Band & Overload released their second album under their own label over internet. Overload went one step ahead & threw its complete album “Pichal Pairee” FREE on internet & denied to give their songs’ rights to any label. (more…)

Album Review: Shafqat Amanat Ali – Tabeer

Shafqat Amanat Ali

Album review: On the right track:
While flicking through TV channels last Sunday afternoon, I came across the video of Shafqat Amanat Ali’s Khairayan De Naal, which is based on a composition by Tufail Niazi. At first glance, judging by the typical video, I expected the song to be one of the run-of-the-mill pieces which mix desi folk or classical vocal compositions with contemporary instruments. Much to my surprise it turned out to be a heartwarming treat. The music production and instruments blended well with his voice quality, the main strength of the song.

Inteha Band

There’s something about Xulfi and his studio, Xth Harmonic. Nearly every band that goes in there ends up coming out sounding eerily similar. Perhaps it’s Xulfi’s little additions to a band’s material; perhaps it’s the engineering of the record itself. Either way, it’s fairly easy to listen to a record and tell whether or not Xulfi had his hands all over it.
